How to fix screen sharing issues on Discord

If you plan to live stream your gaming session or just share your screen in an online meeting, Discord may be your go-to app. However, you can’t gain subscribers or have a productive meeting if you can’t share your screen.

Sometimes, you may come across a “Discord screen sharing not working” error, or something similar. Fortunately, there are many solutions to this problem.

1. Check the status of Discord

Before changing your computer settings, check if the Discord servers are operational. Go to Discord Status to see if there is an issue with the servers. Additionally, if you have a Twitter account, you can follow @discord for any update.

If there are any issues with the Discord servers, there is nothing you can do except wait. If all Discord systems are up and running, the problem could be on your end.

2. Run Discord with administrative rights

It is possible that, for your specific combination of software and hardware, Discord may need administrative rights to function properly. To see if this fixes your problem, you can try running Discord with administrator rights.

Access the properties of the executable file. There you should see an option allowing you to run Discord with administrative rights. Once you’ve saved the new settings, launch Discord and see if this solution fixes the screen sharing issue.

3. Exit full screen

If you are looking for a quick fix, try playing games or using your browser in a normal window. Using full screen mode may cause issues with Discord permissions that will affect the sharing feature.

4. Disable the last technology setting

It is possible that this Discord feature is causing your screen sharing problem. Follow these steps to disable it:

  1. In Discord, go to Settings.

  2. Click on Voice and video under APPLICATION SETTINGS and scroll down the main page to the SCREEN SHARING section.

  3. Turn off the toggle next to Use our latest technology to capture your screen.

5. Disable hardware acceleration

The hardware acceleration feature manages your system resources more efficiently. It reduces CPU usage by reallocating certain tasks to the graphics card. However, if you are using an older computer, hardware acceleration may prevent the screen sharing feature from working properly.

Here’s how you can turn it off:

  1. In Discord, go to Settings.

  2. Of APPLICATION SETTINGS list, select Voice and video.

  3. Turn off the toggle next to H.264 hardware acceleration.

6. Add your game to the Discord activity

Usually, Discord has no problem detecting apps and games on its own, but sometimes it needs a little help. You can manually add your game or app to Discord to resolve the issue.

  1. Open Discord and go to Settings.

  2. Under ACTIVITY PARAMETERS, select Activity status.

  3. Click on Add it!.

  4. Expand the drop-down list and choose the game or app you want to share.

  5. Launch the game and test if you can now share the screen.

7. Update the application

The developers at Discord are constantly releasing updates to fix bugs. If you can’t share your screen, you may need an update to resolve this issue.

Although the app should update itself automatically, you can check for updates manually. Maximize the application window and tap Ctrl + R under Windows or Cmd + R on Mac. Discord will reload the interface and check for an update.

8. Clear data from the Discord cache

Discord uses cache and roaming data to save your account settings and temporary data. This data is important because Discord uses it to provide a smooth user experience. However, if the cache data gets corrupted, it could prevent the screen sharing feature from working properly. To fix this problem, you need to delete the cache files from Discord.

Before deleting data from the Discord cache, make sure you have closed all of its running processes.
